Deck Builder Marketing: A $20,000 Decision Made From Photos in Sixty Days

The short version

A deck is bought the way a kitchen is bought: from photos, over months, with three quotes, and then all at once in spring. Google Ads data shows "deck builders near me" at about 74,000 US searches in June and 18,100 in November, and the homeowner searching in June has been saving pictures since January. The 2025 Cost vs Value report, as summarised by the contractor Ergeon, puts a 16-by-20 composite deck at $25,096 and a wood one at $18,263, so the ticket can carry real marketing; the close rate against the other two quotes is where deck companies win or lose the year.

Prices were checked on September 5, 2026, and each links to where it came from. Our deck building leads guide ranks every lead source by cost per signed job and covers the manufacturer networks and home shows in detail; this guide is the funnel and the calendar that sit over it.

Sixty days, three quotes, and a project the neighbours will watch

Three facts shape the trade.

The first is the window. Searches for "deck builders near me" run four times higher in June than in November, "deck repair near me" peaks in May, and "deck installation" carries into September. (All US monthly Google Ads volumes via DataForSEO, pulled September 5, 2026, the source behind the keyword panels on our deck builder page.) But the decision started in January, on a phone, with saved photos. The company whose photos got saved in January is on the shortlist in April. Larger builds stretch that window further and add a second buyer who searches differently, the general contractor or the developer; our SEO for construction companies guide covers the project-type and portfolio pages that win them.

The second is the ticket and the quote contest. Ergeon's 2026 guide puts wood at $25 to $40 a square foot installed and mid-grade composite at $35 to $55, with typical projects between $5,000 and $25,000. At that price almost every homeowner gets three quotes, and the quotes are compared on more than price: who showed them what it will look like, who handles the permit, who offered financing, and who followed up.

The third is that a deck build is a two-week show in a backyard, visible over every fence on the block, and the neighbours have the same 1990s pressure-treated deck rotting in the same corner. No other trade gets a captive audience for that long.

The budget follows. At a 25% gross margin a $20,000 composite deck leaves about $5,000, so a channel that signs a deck for under $1,500 is working, and the arithmetic in this trade favours spending on the proposal that wins the quote over the ad that finds another one.

The portfolio gets you on the list

Nobody hires a $25,000 deck from a paragraph. The homeowner is collecting pictures, and the company in the collection is the one that gets called.

  • Shoot every deck from the same three angles. Before, during framing, and finished at golden hour, from the yard, from the house, and from above with a drone. Post the set to Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and the Google profile the week it finishes, with the material, the colour and the town in the caption, because homeowners search "Trex Transcend Tiki Torch deck" and "deck builders in [town]" in the same session.
  • Pinterest and Houzz are the January channel. Deck photos get saved in winter and acted on in spring. A board per material and per style, refreshed every fall, is the cheapest six months of marketing in the trade.
  • Ten best on the site, with the price. A gallery page per deck type (composite, wood, multi-level, covered, pool) with ten photos each and a line like "decks like this one run $18,000 to $28,000" wins the homeowner who has read three cost guides and filters the one who has not. It is also the page Google's AI answers quote. Our deck builder website design guide lays that gallery out deck type by deck type, with the design-consult request that asks for a photo of the yard.

The render, the permit and the financing win it

Three quotes arrive. Two are numbers on a page. The one that wins is a picture of the homeowner's own yard with the deck in it, and a sentence about each of the three things they were worried about.

  • The render. Deck design software produces a 3D view of their yard with their deck in an afternoon, and it is the single biggest close-rate lever in the trade. Send it with the proposal, in their colour, from the angle of their kitchen window.
  • The permit and the HOA, handled. "We pull the permit, schedule the inspections and submit to your HOA" is the line that beats a cheaper quote from a builder who leaves that to the homeowner. Put the process on the page, because the homeowner does not know to ask and the competitor does not want them to.
  • Financing, stated. A $25,000 deck at a monthly payment is a different decision from a $25,000 cheque. The financing partner's line belongs on the proposal and the page, and it is the advertising creative that works for this trade.
  • Estimate within a week, follow up three times. Day two, day seven with a photo of a deck finished that week, day fourteen with a start date that is about to be taken. Most deck builders follow up zero times; the third follow-up wins the quiet ones.
  • Manufacturer programs. Trex, TimberTech and Fiberon list certified contractors and refer homeowners who have already chosen the material, which is a shortlist of one. The leads guide covers the programs; the rule is that the certification badge goes on the proposal next to the render.

The backyard build is the ad

For two weeks the crew, the lumber delivery and the growing deck are the most interesting thing on the block, and every neighbour with a rotting deck is watching over the fence.

  • Ask for the yard sign before the job starts, and leave it 30 days. Corrugated signs run from $10.99 each, with a QR code to a booking page for a free design consult.
  • Door hangers on the ten houses either side, the week the deck finishes. The drone photo, the material, and "we built the deck at number 42; neighbours get a free 3D design this month". One online printer lists 1,000 door hangers for $93.51. Decks on a street were built in the same decade and fail in the same decade.
  • Batch the block. Two decks on one street in one season is one lumber drop and a crew that walks between jobs, and it is why the neighbour offer is the delivery cost you are not paying, handed to the customer.
  • Nextdoor and the Facebook groups. "Who built your deck? It looks great" is a thread that starts itself when a neighbour posts a photo. A free Nextdoor business page and a habit of answering with the drone shot of that exact deck is the channel that compounds.
  • Realtors, pool companies and landscapers. A pre-listing deck refinish, a pool that needs a deck, and a landscape design that ends at the patio all arrive without a search. Each partner needs a portfolio, a price sheet and a quarterly call.

Get found in the window, and paid channels priced in 2026 dollars

The Google Business Profile. Primary category "Deck builder", a real service area, and your own drone photos rather than manufacturer stock. Post every finished deck. Our Google Business Profile guide covers the setup.

A page per deck type, with a price range. Composite, wood, multi-level, covered and pool decks, plus deck repair and refinishing for the May searchers, are separate searches with separate tickets, and each page carries ten photos and a price line.

Answer the phone, and book the consult. The April searcher is booking design consults with the first two builders who reply. A tracked number with missed-call text-back ("We saw you called. Send a photo of your yard and we'll text a ballpark today") gets you onto the shortlist from the second listing.

Then the paid channels, in the window only:

1. Google Search ads, for composite and brand terms. Clicks cost about $15.35 for "deck builders near me", $18.36 for "deck installation", $11.67 for "composite deck builders" and $36.54 for "trex deck installers" (Google Ads averages via DataForSEO, September 2026). The brand term is expensive because the searcher has already chosen a $25,000 material; send it to the composite gallery page with the render offer. Run from February to June and stop.

2. Google Local Services Ads. Available under the deck and fencing job types with the Google Verified badge, but 99 Calls publishes no deck-specific lead cost, and the leads guide links the benchmarks that exist. Test it in your metro with a budget cap.

3. Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest ads. The drone photo with a monthly payment in the headline, to your own zip codes, from January to April.

What to skip. Shared marketplace leads for a $20,000 project go to several builders and produce the three-quote buyer at their most price-driven. Our Angi and Thumbtack breakdowns have the numbers.

Fill the winter: design consults and repairs

The build season ends with the first frost, but the decision season starts in January, and the company that books spring starts in winter never has an empty April.

  • Winter design consults. "Book a free 3D design in January and lock a spring start date" to every past enquiry and every saved-photo follower. The render takes an afternoon, the homeowner gets to decide slowly, and the calendar fills before the competitors have woken up.
  • Deck repair and refinishing. "Deck repair near me" peaks in May at 14,800 searches, and a board-and-stain job is a small ticket that turns into a replacement conversation when the joists are inspected. It is also the entry point for the homeowner who is not ready for $25,000.
  • Inspections for realtors. A deck on an inspection report is a repair or a replacement before closing, on a deadline, without a quote contest.
  • Covered decks, pergolas and screened porches. Same crew, shoulder-season work, searched separately.

Each needs a price sheet, a written proposal within a week, and a call in October. That is an afternoon a week from the owner in the fall, which is the marketing budget most deck builders never allocate because the season felt over.

What a deck builder marketing agency costs, and when it pays

Page one for "deck builder marketing" is agencies. The prices, where they are published:

The break-even. At 25% gross margin a $20,000 composite deck leaves about $5,000, so a $2,800-a-month retainer pays for itself on one extra deck every two months. Like roofing, the arithmetic is easy; the question is whether an agency is the thing that produces that deck. In a company closing one quote in three, it is not: the render, the permit line and the follow-up double the value of every enquiry the company already has, for the cost of design software.

An agency is worth it once the funnel closes two in three, the crews are booked into July by April, and the owner has no hours left in January. Before that, the year-one work an agency does (the profile, the gallery pages, the review asks, the posts) is what software does for $99 a month, and the render, the yard sign and the neighbour offer cannot be outsourced.

Where ServicePro fits

ServicePro is the getting-found half of this guide as software: marketing agency support at software prices. The free plan builds a site from your Google Business Profile in about five minutes, on your own domain, with up to five service pages (composite, wood, covered decks, repairs, pergolas), each with room for the gallery and the price line, a booking page for the design consult that the yard-sign QR code opens, an inbox for every call and message, and five review requests a month.

Pro is $99 a month, no contract, and covers the list an agency would charge a retainer for: Google Map rank tracking for "deck builders near me" across every town you serve, up to 25 location pages, a tracked phone number with two-way texting and missed-call text-back for the April rush, 100 automatic review requests a month with AI-drafted replies, and posts written and published for you to your Google Business Profile and to Facebook and Instagram, including the drone photos.

We do not run your ads or draw your renders. The deck builder page shows what the site and the rank tracking look like for this trade.

A 30-day plan for a one-crew builder

Do this in December, so the portfolio is being saved in January and the consults are booked by March.

  • Week 1: the portfolio. Photograph or gather the last twenty decks from three angles, and upload them to the Google profile, Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest with material, colour and town in every caption. Write the review-request text, asking for the process to be named, and send it to the last twenty customers.
  • Week 2: the funnel. Set up deck design software and build the proposal template around the render, the permit and HOA line, and the financing line. Write the three follow-up messages and put them in a calendar. Get the site live with a gallery page per deck type and a price line on each.
  • Week 3: the partners and the winter offer. Send the free January design consult offer to every past enquiry. Email five realtors, three pool companies and three landscapers with the portfolio and a price sheet. Apply to the manufacturer contractor programs. Order ten yard signs and 500 door hangers for the first spring build.
  • Week 4: the numbers. Count signed decks by source rather than enquiries, and close rate by month. A tracked number on the signs and hangers, another on any ads, and "how did you hear about us" on every proposal. By April you will know whether the funnel is closing two in three and how many spring starts came from January consults, and those two numbers decide the season.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get more deck building jobs?

Get onto the shortlist with a portfolio the homeowner saves in January: every deck from three angles on the Google profile, Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest, with material and town in the caption. Then win the three-quote contest with a 3D render of their yard, a line saying you handle the permit and the HOA, a financing option, and three follow-ups. The build itself sells the next one on the street with a yard sign and door hangers.

When is the best time to market a deck building business?

January to April. Searches for "deck builders near me" run four times higher in June than in November, but the decision starts in winter with saved photos, so the portfolio and a free design consult offer belong in January, and the spring start dates are booked by March. Deck repair searches peak in May for the homeowners not ready to replace.

What is the best marketing for a deck builder?

The portfolio and the render. A homeowner spending $25,000 picks from pictures, so the company whose photos they saved is on the shortlist, and the company that sends a 3D view of their own yard with the deck in it, handles the permit, and offers financing wins it. Paid channels only fill the calendar once that funnel closes two quotes in three.

How much does a deck cost, and what does that mean for marketing?

Ergeon's 2026 guide puts wood at $25 to $40 a square foot installed and mid-grade composite at $35 to $55, and cites the 2025 Cost vs Value report's $25,096 for a 16-by-20 composite deck. At a 25% gross margin that leaves about $5,000 per deck, so a channel that signs a deck for under $1,500 is working, and the proposal that wins the quote is worth more than the ad that finds another one.

Should I hire a deck builder marketing agency?

Published prices run from $249 a month (Footbridge Media, plus a $775 ad-spend minimum) to $2,800 a month and up (Hook Agency), and at about $5,000 gross profit per deck the expensive end pays for itself on one extra deck every two months. The catch is that for a builder closing one quote in three, the render and the follow-up double the value of every enquiry first, for the price of design software.

How do deck builders get referrals?

From the block and from partners. A two-week build is watched over every fence, so a yard sign for 30 days and door hangers with the drone photo turn one deck into the next one on the street. Realtors with a deck on an inspection report, pool companies and landscape designers each hand over projects without a quote contest, and the manufacturer programs refer homeowners who have already chosen the material.
