Painter SEO: Rank on Images, Colour Names and a Price Range
Painter SEO is two seasons, five searches and a lot of pictures
Google Ads data puts "painters near me" and "house painters near me" at about 110,000 US searches a month each, peaking at 165,000 in January, "cabinet painting" at 40,500, "exterior painting" at 27,100, "painting contractors near me" at 22,200, "interior painters" at 14,800 peaking in November, and "house painting cost" at 3,600 (US monthly volumes via DataForSEO, pulled September 5, 2026). Interiors are searched after the holidays, exteriors are planned in winter and painted from the first dry week, and cabinets are searched all year at a click price a sixth of the main term.
The painting searcher is different from the plumbing searcher in one way that shapes everything: they are looking at pictures. The map pack and the site behind it are judged on before-and-after photos before anything else, and Google's image results and the AI answers that quote a price range are part of the same search. Our painting contractor marketing guide covers the three-quote funnel; this guide is how to be on the shortlist in the first place. AI Overviews appeared on about 15% of "near me" searches in our August 2026 check, so the map pack, the images and the pages behind them are what the searcher sees.
A page per service, each with a price range and ten photos
| Search | US searches/mo | Peak | The page |
|---|---|---|---|
| painters near me, house painters near me | 110,000 | January | Homepage and location pages, with the portfolio |
| interior painters | 14,800 | November | Interior painting, priced per room and per home |
| exterior painting | 27,100 | January (planned), painted in spring | Exterior painting, priced per square foot and per home |
| cabinet painting | 40,500 | January | Cabinet painting and refinishing, priced per kitchen |
| painting contractors near me | 22,200 | February | Commercial and property-management painting |
| house painting cost | 3,600 | September | The cost page: your ranges by service |
Each page carries a price range in the shape NerdWallet's 2026 guide uses, citing Angi data: exteriors at $1,800 to $4,500 with an average of $3,177, interiors at $2 to $6 a square foot with an average of $2,021. "Most exteriors we paint run $2,500 to $5,000" gets the call from the homeowner who can afford it, filters the one who cannot, and is the line Google's AI answers quote. Each page also carries ten before-and-after pairs from the same angle, because for this trade the photos are the ranking content. Our painting contractor website design guide organises that portfolio by service and colour, and covers the proposal request underneath it.
The cabinet page is the cheapest ranking in the trade
"Cabinet painting" is searched 40,500 times a month and its click costs about $2.23 against $13.35 for "painters near me", which means fewer painters are competing for it in ads and in organic results. Most painting sites mention cabinets in a list; almost none have a page with ten before-and-after kitchens, the process (degrease, sand, prime, spray, cure), the turnaround, and a per-kitchen price range.
That page ranks faster than any other on a painting site, it is searched all year rather than in a season, and a cabinet job is often the first of a whole-house relationship. Build it first, refresh it in January when the search peaks, and put the kitchen photos on the Google Business Profile with the cabinet colour in the caption.
Images that rank: same angle, colour name, file name
Painting is the trade where image search and the profile's photo tab matter as much as the text, and the rules are simple:
- Shoot every job from the same spot, before and after, at the same time of day, so the pair reads instantly.
- Name the file and the alt text with the job and the town: "exterior-painting-benjamin-moore-hale-navy-[town].jpg". Homeowners search colour names in the same session as "painters near me", and the painter whose photo comes up for "Hale Navy exterior" is on the shortlist.
- Put the colour name and the town in the caption on the Google Business Profile, Instagram and Pinterest, which is where painting photos get saved in winter and acted on in spring.
- Ten photos per service page, one hero per location page.
A painting site with fifty well-named before-and-after pairs outranks one with a paragraph about quality workmanship, and it is the site the AI answer points to when someone asks who painted the navy house.
The profile and the reviews that name the room
- Primary category "Painter", with "Cabinet refinishing" as a secondary if you do it.
- Service-area business with the towns you paint in.
- Services with prices on the profile: "Interior painting, from $400 per room" on the listing wins the tap.
- Photos monthly, with the colour name in the caption.
- Posts every two weeks: the finished kitchen, the exterior in spring light, the January interior offer.
BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey (BrightLocal sells local SEO software, so read it with that in mind) found 97% of people read reviews before choosing a local business and 47% will not consider one with fewer than 20 reviews. For a three-quote buyer the count is the first filter, and the review that ranks names the room, the colour and the process: "whole main floor in Chantilly Lace, walls patched, done in three days". Ask by text at the final walk-through, and reply naming the neighbourhood. Our Google Business Profile guide covers the setup.
Location pages for the towns you paint in, and the seasonal refresh
"Painters in [Town]" pages, one per town in the service area, each with a hero photo of a house you painted there, the neighbourhood, a review from that town and the price range, put a two-crew painter in the map pack across a metro. Five to ten is typical; thin pages are scored site-wide since the March 2026 core update, so only towns with a job to show.
The calendar: refresh the interior and cabinet pages with this year's photos and prices in December, before the January peak; refresh the exterior page in February, before the planning searches turn into estimates; update the cost page in September when "house painting cost" peaks; and post to the profile every two weeks through both seasons. A page updated before the searches arrive ranks above one updated after. The painting page shows what a site with service and location pages looks like for this trade.
What not to do
- A gallery page organised by date. Organise by service and by colour, because that is how the searcher looks.
- Stock photos of rollers and swatches. They rank for nothing and they signal a painter with no work to show.
- A homepage with no price. The three-quote buyer has read three cost guides; the site without a number loses the tap.
- Location pages for towns with no photo from that town. A page with nothing true on it is the kind the core update scores across the whole site.
- Blogging "how to paint a room". It ranks for the homeowner who will do it themselves.
- Skipping the profile's product section. Google Business Profile products with a photo and a price ("Interior repaint, from $450 a room") show in the pack and the knowledge panel, and painters almost never fill them in. It is free ranking content, and it answers the price question before the call.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does SEO take for a painting company?
The profile can move within weeks once it has photos with colour names and reviews naming the room; the cabinet page usually ranks within two to three months because so few painters have one; the map pack in a town takes two to four months after its location page goes live; and the main terms take three to six months. Build in the fall so the pages are ranking for the January interior peak.
What are the best keywords for painters?
"Painters near me" and "house painters near me" (about 110,000 US searches a month each, 165,000 in January), "cabinet painting" (40,500, at a sixth of the click price), "exterior painting" (27,100), "painting contractors near me" (22,200), "interior painters" (14,800, peaking in November) and "house painting cost" (3,600). Each deserves its own page with a price range and ten photos.
Should painters put prices on their website?
Yes, as ranges by service. "Most exteriors we paint run $2,500 to $5,000; interiors $400 to $800 per room" wins the three-quote buyer who has already read cost guides, filters the one who cannot afford it, and is the line Google's AI answers quote. NerdWallet's 2026 guide puts the national average exterior at $3,177 and interior at $2,021.
Do photos help a painter rank on Google?
More than in any other trade. Before-and-after pairs from the same angle, with the colour name and the town in the file name, the alt text and the profile caption, rank in image search and on the profile's photo tab, and homeowners search colour names in the same session as "painters near me". Fifty well-named pairs outrank a paragraph about workmanship.
Does ServicePro do SEO for painters?
Yes. The free plan builds the site with a page per service, the portfolio and a price range; Pro at $99 a month adds rank tracking for "painters near me" and "cabinet painting" in every town you serve, location pages, automatic review requests, and the before-and-after pairs posted to your Google profile and social accounts with the colour in the caption.
