Painting Contractor Marketing: Win the Three-Quote Buyer
The short version
Painting is bought the way no emergency trade is bought. The homeowner has weeks, gets three quotes, and picks the painter whose photos they trusted and whose estimate arrived first and followed up. An exterior job averages $3,177 and an interior $2,021, per NerdWallet's 2026 guide citing Angi data, so the ticket can carry real marketing; the close rate is where most painting companies leak.
| Channel | 2026 cost | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| The quote funnel: same-day estimate, photo proposal, three follow-ups | $0 | Winning two of every three quotes instead of one |
| Before-and-after portfolio on the site and social | $0 | The photo that gets you on the shortlist |
| Google Business Profile and a page per service | $0 to $99/mo | The January interior peak and the spring exterior season |
| Referral partners: realtors, property managers, HOAs, designers | Time | Repaints on a cycle, without a quote contest |
| Yard sign and the street, for exterior jobs | From $10.99 a sign | The billboard that a two-week exterior job already is |
| Google Local Services Ads | About $45 per charged lead | Filling the estimate calendar, once someone answers |
| Google Search ads | $2.23 to $16.20 per click | Cabinet and interior work, sent to the matching page |
| Marketing agency | $249 to $2,800+/mo | When the crews are full and the owner is the bottleneck |
Prices were checked on September 5, 2026, and each links to where it came from. Our painting advertising guide covers the paid channels, the before-and-after ad unit and the seasonal budget; this guide is the funnel and the partner system that sit over it.
Two seasons, three quotes, one follow-up
Google Ads data shows "painters near me" at about 165,000 US searches in January and 60,500 in November, and "interior painters" peaking in November at 40,500. Exterior work is searched in spring and painted in summer; "exterior painting" peaks in January too, when homeowners plan it. (All US monthly volumes via DataForSEO, pulled September 5, 2026, the source behind the keyword panels on our painting page.)
So painting has an interior season that starts after the holidays and an exterior season that runs from the first dry week to the first frost, and a painter who plans both keeps a crew busy all year.
The number that decides the business is the close rate. A painting customer is not in a hurry, and almost every one gets three quotes. If your estimate takes four days to arrive as a number on a text, and the competitor's arrived the same day as a page with photos of similar houses and a line-by-line scope, you lost before price came up. Most painting companies close one quote in three. The ones that grow close two, and the difference is entirely in the funnel below.
The ticket sets the budget. At a 35% gross margin a $3,177 exterior leaves about $1,100 and a $2,021 interior about $700, so a channel that produces a signed job for under $300 is working, and a lead that costs $45 but never gets a follow-up call is the most expensive thing in the trade.
The quote funnel is the marketing
Every dollar spent finding a homeowner who wants three quotes is wasted if the quote loses. What the two-in-three painters do:
- Estimate within 24 hours, on site or by video. The first quote in the homeowner's inbox sets the frame the other two are judged against. Offer a same-day video walk-through for interiors and a next-day visit for exteriors.
- Send a proposal, never a number. One page: the scope by room or elevation, the prep (this is where cheap painters cut and where you win), the paint line and sheen, the schedule, the price, and three photos of a similar job you finished. A homeowner comparing a page to two text messages picks the page. The form that starts it — the proposal request that asks for photos of the room before you drive out — is covered in our painting contractor website design guide.
- Follow up three times, on a schedule. Day two: "Any questions on the proposal?" Day five: a photo of a job finished this week. Day ten: "We have an opening the week of the 20th if you'd like it." Most painters follow up zero times; the third follow-up wins a quarter of the jobs that would have gone quiet.
- Offer the colour consult. Thirty minutes with sample pots or a digital mock-up, free with the estimate. It is the reason to book you rather than the other two, and it moves the conversation from price to the result.
- Ask for the review at the final walk-through. BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey (BrightLocal sells local SEO software) found 97% of people read reviews before choosing a local business and 47% will not consider one with fewer than 20 reviews. For a three-quote buyer, the review count is the first filter. The link goes by text while the homeowner is standing in the finished room.
Write the funnel down, put the follow-ups in a calendar, and track close rate by month. It is the one number in painting that marketing money cannot fix and that a script can.
The portfolio, and the street you are painting
Painting is the most photogenic trade after pressure washing, and the photo is what gets a painter onto the shortlist in the first place.
- Shoot every job from the same spot, before and after. One wide shot of the elevation or the room, same angle, same time of day. Post the pair to Instagram, Facebook and the Google profile the day the job finishes, with the colour name in the caption, because homeowners search colour names. The painting advertising guide covers turning the pair into the one ad unit that works.
- An exterior job is a two-week billboard. The scaffolding, the crew and the half-painted house are watched by the whole street. Ask for a yard sign for the length of the job plus a week; corrugated signs run from $10.99 each, with a QR code to the booking page. Door hangers on the ten houses either side, with the before-and-after and a line "we're painting number 42 this week, neighbours get a free colour consult", cost about nine cents each. Houses on a street were painted in the same decade; they need repainting in the same year.
- Cabinets are their own business. "Cabinet painting" is searched 40,500 times a month and clicks cost about $2.23, a fraction of the $13.35 for "painters near me". A cabinet page with ten before-and-after pairs is the cheapest lead source in the trade, and a cabinet job is often the first of a whole-house relationship.
- Nextdoor and the neighbourhood groups. "Can anyone recommend a painter?" is asked in every group every January. A free Nextdoor business page and a habit of answering with a photo from that neighbourhood is the channel that compounds.
Referral partners who repaint on a cycle
A three-quote buyer is the expensive kind of customer. A few kinds of customer repaint on a schedule and hand the job to one painter without a contest:
- Property managers. Every tenant turnover is a repaint of at least the walls, on a deadline, at a flat rate. One manager with fifty units is more interior work than a winter of ads, and it arrives in the months homeowners are not calling.
- Realtors and stagers. A pre-listing repaint in a neutral colour is the highest-return prep an agent recommends, and they recommend one painter. Turnaround and a proposal the agent can forward are what get you on the list.
- HOAs. Exterior repaints on a cycle across a whole community, approved once by the board and scheduled for years. The bid is won on insurance, references and a colour-compliance process.
- Interior designers and remodelers. Every project ends in paint, and designers are asked for a painter on every job. Send them your portfolio and take their referrals; send yours back.
- Builders. New-construction and punch-list painting at volume, lower margin, steady.
Each needs a one-page price sheet by room and by elevation, a proposal within 48 hours, and a call once a quarter. That is an afternoon a week from the owner, which is the marketing budget most painting companies never allocate.
Get found in both seasons
Everything above sends the homeowner to Google to check the name, and the shortlist is built from what they find.
The Google Business Profile. Primary category "Painter", a real service area, and your own before-and-after pairs rather than stock. Post every finished job. Our Google Business Profile guide covers the setup.
A page per service, because the searches are separate. Interior, exterior, cabinets and commercial are four searches with four tickets and four seasons. "Cabinet painting" (40,500 a month), "exterior painting" (27,100), "interior painters" (14,800) and "painting contractors near me" (22,200) each deserve a page with ten photos and a price range. A homepage cannot rank for all of them.
A price range on every page. Painting buyers are researching, and a page that says "most exteriors we paint run $2,500 to $5,000" gets the call from the homeowner who can afford it and saves the estimate visit on the one who cannot. It also gets quoted by Google's AI answers, which prefer pages that name a number.
Answer the phone in January. The interior searcher is calling three painters and booking estimates with the first two that pick up. A tracked number with text-back for missed calls ("We saw you called. Send a photo of the room and we'll text a ballpark today") gets you onto the shortlist from the second listing.
Paid channels, priced in 2026 dollars
Paid channels fill the estimate calendar, and only the funnel above turns estimates into jobs. In the order we would turn them on:
1. Google Local Services Ads. Pay per lead, above the map, with the Google Verified badge that replaced Google Guaranteed in October 2025. 99 Calls publishes its clients' numbers: for September 2026 the average cost per charged painting lead was $45.30, the median $44.58 and the typical range $32.65 to $48.97, from 15 campaigns over three months, one of the better-sampled trades on their list. At a one-in-three close rate that is about $135 per signed job; at two-in-three it is $68. On a $3,177 exterior either works. Answer on the first ring and book the estimate on the call.
2. Google Search ads, for cabinets and interiors. Clicks cost about $13.35 for "painters near me", $16.20 for "interior painters", $12.97 for "painting contractors near me" and $2.23 for "cabinet painting" (Google Ads averages via DataForSEO, September 2026). The cabinet term is the bargain of the trade. Send each ad to the matching page with the price range on it. The seasonal budget and what to skip are in the painting advertising guide.
3. Facebook and Instagram. The before-and-after pair boosted to your own zip codes in January for interiors and in April for exteriors, and a retargeting ad with a colour-consult offer for people who visited the site and did not book.
What to skip. Shared marketplace leads for painting go to several contractors and produce the three-quote buyer at its most price-driven. Our Thumbtack and Angi breakdowns have the numbers.
What a painting marketing agency costs, and when it pays
Most of page one for "painting contractor marketing" is agencies. The prices, where they are published:
- Hook Agency, a home-service specialist, publishes local SEO from $2,800 a month, Google Ads management from $2,000 a month plus spend, and a website at $1,000 a month for twelve months.
- Footbridge Media runs a budget program at $249 a month plus a $775 minimum monthly ad spend if they manage Google Ads, month to month.
- The painting specialists quote after a call. Our marketing agency cost guide has the full comparison by trade.
The break-even. At 35% gross margin a $3,177 exterior leaves about $1,100 and a $2,021 interior about $700, so a $2,800-a-month retainer needs three extra exteriors or four extra interiors a month, every month, from customers you would not otherwise have found. That is reachable for a company with two or three crews whose close rate is already two in three. For a company closing one in three, the same $2,800 spent on nothing but the funnel (a proposal template, a follow-up calendar, a colour consult) returns more, because it doubles the value of every lead you already have.
An agency is worth it once the funnel is fixed, the crews are full, and the owner has no hours left. Before that, the year-one work an agency does (the profile, the service pages, the review asks, the posts) is what software does for $99 a month, and the proposal, the follow-ups and the partner calls cannot be outsourced, because they carry your name.
Where ServicePro fits
ServicePro is the getting-found half of this guide as software: marketing agency support at software prices. The free plan builds a site from your Google Business Profile in about five minutes, on your own domain, with up to five service pages (interior, exterior, cabinets, commercial, colour consults), a booking page that the yard-sign QR code opens, an inbox for every call and message, and five review requests a month.
Pro is $99 a month, no contract, and covers the list an agency would charge a retainer for: Google Map rank tracking for "painters near me" and "cabinet painting" across every town you serve, up to 25 location pages, a tracked phone number with two-way texting and missed-call text-back for the January rush, 100 automatic review requests a month with AI-drafted replies, and posts written and published for you to your Google Business Profile and to Facebook and Instagram, including the before-and-after pairs.
We do not run your ads or write your proposals. The painting page shows what the site and the rank tracking look like for this trade.
A 30-day plan for a one- or two-crew company
Do this in December, before the January interior peak, and again in March before exterior season.
- Week 1: the funnel. Build the one-page proposal template, write the three follow-up messages and put them in a calendar, and set up the colour consult offer. Track close rate from this week on.
- Week 2: the foundation. Clean up the Google Business Profile, set the service area, upload twenty before-and-after pairs. Get the site live with a page each for interior, exterior, cabinets and commercial, each with a price range and ten photos. Write the review-request text and send it to the last twenty customers.
- Week 3: the partners and the application. Email five property managers, five realtors, three designers and two HOA managers with a one-page price sheet and a 48-hour proposal promise. Apply for Local Services Ads, since verification takes days. Order ten yard signs and 500 door hangers for the first exterior job.
- Week 4: the numbers. Count signed jobs by source rather than estimates, and close rate by month. A tracked number on the signs and hangers, another on the ads, and "how did you hear about us" on every proposal. By February you will know which channel produces buyers who sign and whether the funnel is closing two in three, and the second number is the one to fix first.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get more painting jobs?
Win more of the quotes you already give: estimate within 24 hours, send a one-page proposal with photos and scope instead of a number, follow up three times on a schedule, and offer a free colour consult. Then get on the shortlist with a before-and-after portfolio on the Google profile and social, twenty reviews, and a page per service with a price range. Paid channels fill the calendar after that.
How much do painting leads cost on Google Local Services Ads?
99 Calls' client data for September 2026 puts the average charged painting lead at $45.30, the median at $44.58 and the typical range at $32.65 to $48.97, from 15 campaigns over three months. At a one-in-three close rate that is about $135 per signed job, and at two-in-three about $68, against a $3,177 average exterior.
What is the best marketing for a painting company?
The portfolio and the follow-up. A before-and-after pair posted the day a job finishes gets you onto the three-quote shortlist; a proposal that arrives first with photos and scope, followed up three times, wins it. For exteriors, the job itself is a two-week billboard, so add a yard sign and door hangers on the street.
When is the best time to market a painting business?
December for the interior season, when "painters near me" searches nearly triple into January, and March for exteriors, which are planned in winter and painted from the first dry week. Property managers and HOAs decide repaint contracts on their own cycle, so those calls happen every quarter regardless of season.
Should I hire a painting marketing agency?
Published prices run from $249 a month (Footbridge Media, plus a $775 ad-spend minimum) to $2,800 a month and up (Hook Agency). At 35% gross margin the expensive end needs three extra exteriors or four extra interiors a month to break even. If your close rate is one in three, fix the quote funnel first; it doubles the value of every lead and costs nothing.
How do painters get commercial and property management work?
With a price sheet by room and elevation, a proposal within 48 hours, proof of insurance, and a quarterly call. Property managers hand every turnover repaint to one painter on a flat rate, HOAs schedule exterior cycles for years, and designers and remodelers are asked for a painter on every project. One manager with fifty units is more interior work than a winter of ads.
