How to Start a Gutter Cleaning Business in 2026: A Ladder, a Vacuum, and Eight Weeks That Pay for the Year
The short version
Gutter cleaning is a ladder, a season, and a question. GutterProVac's March 2026 guide (GutterProVac sells gutter vacuums, so read its equipment tiers with that in mind) prices a budget start at $3,400 to $5,300 and a professional one at $7,800 to $15,000, with the vacuum the only expensive line: $2,500 to $3,500 for an entry system or $4,500 to $7,000 for a professional one, plus poles at $200 to $400 or $600 to $1,200. Our gutter cleaning pricing guide puts the average job at $168, most between $119 and $234, and GutterProVac's own tiers run $100 to $175 for a single storey, $175 to $300 for two, $300 to $500 for a large house and $400 to $1,500 commercial.
The season is the thing. "Gutter cleaning near me" is searched 40,500 times a month on average, 33,100 in March and 60,500 in October (Google Ads data via DataForSEO, September 2026). Eight weeks in October and November is a third of the year's revenue, and the reason a gutter business is almost always also a window, pressure washing or roof business.

The rest of this post is the ladder, the season, and the other ten months.
Three facts that shape a gutter cleaning start
The vacuum is optional; the ladder is not. A ladder, a scoop, a bucket and a hose clean a gutter; the vacuum cleans it from the ground, faster, and without the fall. GutterProVac (which sells them) makes the case for the vacuum from day one; the honest version is that a ladder start at about $1,500 with insurance does the first season, and the vacuum is what the October money buys when the second storey and the speed start to matter. Either way, the fall risk is the insurance line, and general liability at $500 to $1,200 a year is the price of the ladder.
October is the year. The searches double between spring and fall, and the customer who searches in October wants it done this week before the leaves clog the downspout. Every channel below is aimed at booking October in September; a business that starts advertising in October competes for what the booked companies turned down.
The ladder needs ten more months. Gutter cleaning alone is a seasonal income. The same ladder, insurance and customer list do windows in spring ("window cleaning near me" peaks in September), pressure washing in summer, and gutter guards as an upsell all year. Our window cleaning start guide is the same business from the other end of the year.
What it costs to start, line by line
The equipment. A multi-position ladder and safety gear at $200 to $500 by Housecall Pro's window cleaning guide, and the same ladder does both trades. A gutter vacuum at $2,500 to $3,500 entry or $4,500 to $7,000 professional with poles at $200 to $400 or $600 to $1,200; the vendor's numbers, and the upgrade the first October should pay for. Scoops, a hose, a bucket, gloves and a leaf blower for the roof are under $200.
Insurance. GutterProVac puts general liability at $500 to $1,200 a year; MoneyGeek's August 2026 report puts the same cover for window cleaners, the nearest ladder trade it prices, at $81 a month, with workers' compensation at $102. Commercial auto if the vehicle carries the ladder and the branding.
Registration. An LLC at the state's filing fee, $35 in Montana to $500 in Massachusetts, and a local business licence. No state licenses gutter cleaning. Gutter guard installation can need a home-improvement contractor registration in some states; check before selling guards.
What it pays. GutterProVac puts a solo operator at $50,000 to $90,000 a year doing four to six houses a day at $150 to $300 in season. At the $168 average, a full October day is $700 to $1,000, and the eight-week season is most of the year's revenue.
Book October in September
Gutter has no advertising post of its own because the channels are the window cleaning ones on a different calendar; our window cleaning advertising guide has the copy, and the gutter cleaning leads guide ranks every channel by cost per booked house.
1. The profile and the page, with a price by storey. Primary category "Gutter cleaning service", a real service area, and the price on the page: "single storey from $100, two storey from $175, guards and repairs quoted on site". The searcher in October is comparing three profiles and calls the one with a number.
2. The September mailer. USPS Every Door Direct Mail at $0.26 a piece to the carrier routes with the most trees, in the last week of September, with the two-storey price and a QR code.
3. The neighbours of every job. A door hanger at about nine cents (1,000 for $93.51) on the ten houses either side, because every house on the street has the same trees.
4. Last year's customers. Gutters clog every fall. A text in mid-September to everyone from last October is the best-converting lead in the trade and costs nothing.
5. Local Services Ads, under the window cleaning vertical. Google's category list has no gutter cleaning category; gutter cleaning is a job type inside "Window cleaning services", and the industry range is $25 to $80 a lead, rising in the fall peak. Apply in August; verification takes weeks.
The day-one stack
- A phone answered from the roof, or a missed-call text: "On a ladder, back to you at 3. Single or two storey, and roughly how many feet of gutter?"
- The Google Business Profile, with the price by storey in the services list. The setup guide is the checklist.
- A site with a page per service and the price on it. ServicePro's free plan builds it from the profile in about five minutes, on your own domain, with up to five service pages (gutter cleaning, gutter guards, downspout repair, window cleaning, pressure washing), a booking page a door hanger's QR code opens, an inbox for every call and message, and five review requests a month.
- Scheduling, when October fills. ServiceM8 is free for one user and 30 jobs a month and Jobber Core is $29 a month on annual billing. The first season runs on a calendar.
- A card reader. Paid in the driveway, photo of the clean gutter texted as the receipt.
The first 90 days, starting in August
August: the kit and the paperwork. Buy the ladder and the hand tools, form the LLC, buy general liability. Set up the profile and the site with the price by storey. Apply for Local Services Ads under the window cleaning vertical. Clean three houses on one street for the cost of the drive and photograph every gutter before and after.
September: the booking month. Mail the carrier routes with the most trees. Text last year's customers if there are any; if not, hang the hangers on the three streets you cleaned. Ask every customer for a review by text as the ladder goes back on the truck.
October and November: the season. Four to six houses a day, hangers on every job's neighbours, guards offered on every visit. By the end of November you know cost per booked house for every channel and whether the season paid for the vacuum, which decides whether the second year starts with windows in March or a second ladder in October.
The mistakes that end the first year
Starting the marketing in October. The season is eight weeks and the booked companies are booked by the second. September is the month the year is made.
Working the ladder uninsured. One fall or one cracked skylight is the business. $500 to $1,200 a year.
Having no plan for December. A gutter-only business earns for eight weeks. Windows, pressure washing and guards are the same ladder, the same insurance and the same customers; decide in month one which one the spring is.
Quoting by the hour. The customer wants a price by storey before they book, and the one who gets it on the phone books. Hourly is a negotiation in a driveway.
Four reviews in October. BrightLocal's 2026 survey (BrightLocal sells local SEO software, so read it with that in mind) found 47% of people will not consider a business with fewer than 20 reviews. Ask on every job, by text, with the before-and-after.
Where ServicePro fits
ServicePro is the getting-found half of this post as software, and it is built for a business with a ladder and no marketing budget, which is what the free plan is.
The free plan builds a site from your Google Business Profile in about five minutes, on your own domain, with up to five service pages (gutter cleaning, gutter guards, downspout repair, window cleaning, pressure washing), each with a price by storey on it, a booking page that a door hanger's QR code opens, an inbox for every call and message, a review widget with five review requests a month, and no per-lead fees at any volume. Have it live in August so it is ranking by October.
Pro is $99 a month, no contract, for when the first October is full and the question is the next town: Google Map rank tracking for "gutter cleaning near me" and "window cleaning near me" across every town you serve, up to 25 location pages, a tracked phone number with two-way texting so the call that arrives on the roof gets a text back, 100 automatic review requests a month with AI-drafted replies, and posts written and published for you to your Google Business Profile and to Facebook and Instagram.
The gutter cleaning page shows what the site and the rank tracking look like for this trade. Choosing the tool that schedules the season and takes the card is a separate decision; the general tools in our pressure washing software roundup cover the same ground for this ladder. Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to start a gutter cleaning business?
$3,400 to $5,300 for a budget start or $7,800 to $15,000 for a professional one, by GutterProVac's March 2026 guide (GutterProVac sells gutter vacuums). The vacuum is the only expensive line at $2,500 to $3,500 entry or $4,500 to $7,000 professional; a ladder, scoop and hose start at about $1,500 including general liability at $500 to $1,200 a year, and the first October pays for the vacuum.
Do I need a licence to clean gutters?
No state licenses gutter cleaning. You need a business registration or an LLC at $35 to $500 depending on the state, a local business licence, and general liability insurance because the risk is the ladder. Gutter guard installation can require a home-improvement contractor registration in some states, so check before selling guards.
How much do gutter cleaners charge?
The average job is $168, with most between $119 and $234, per HomeGuide and Angi's 2026 data. By storey: $100 to $175 for a single-storey house, $175 to $300 for two storeys, $300 to $500 for a large house and $400 to $1,500 for commercial buildings. Guards, downspout repairs and a spring visit are the add-ons.
When is gutter cleaning season?
October and November. "Gutter cleaning near me" is searched 33,100 times a month in March and 60,500 in October, and the eight weeks after the leaves fall are a third of the year's revenue. A second, smaller spring season follows the pollen; the rest of the year the same ladder cleans windows and pressure washes.
Is gutter cleaning profitable?
GutterProVac puts a solo operator at $50,000 to $90,000 a year doing four to six houses a day in season at $150 to $300 each. The margin is high because the equipment is cheap; the constraint is the eight-week season, which is why most gutter businesses also do windows, pressure washing or roof work with the same ladder.
How do I get gutter cleaning customers?
Book October in September: a Google Business Profile and a page with the price by storey, a carrier-route mailer at $0.26 a piece to the streets with the most trees, door hangers at about nine cents on the neighbours of every job, and a text to last year's customers in mid-September. Local Services Ads has no gutter category, but gutter cleaning is a job type inside the Window cleaning services vertical at $25 to $80 a lead in the fall.
Do I need a gutter vacuum to start?
No. A ladder, a scoop, a bucket and a hose clean a gutter, and a ladder start with insurance is about $1,500. The vacuum, at $2,500 to $7,000, cleans from the ground, faster and without the fall, and it is what the first October's revenue should buy if two-storey houses are most of the route.
